Overview
Chickasaw plum is a Florida native small tree known for clouds of white flowers in late winter or early spring. Small tart plums follow the blooms. Its informal branching creates strong seasonal interest in native landscapes.
Mature Size
It commonly reaches 12 to 20 feet tall and wide. The plant spreads by suckers and often forms a thicket when left unmanaged.
Light and Water
Plant in full sun for the heaviest flowering and fruiting. Water regularly during establishment. Once rooted, it handles normal Central Florida dry periods.
Soil and Drainage
Well-drained sandy soil works well. Avoid constantly wet locations. A slightly acidic site supports healthy growth.
Care
Remove unwanted suckers to maintain a single tree or compact grove. Prune after flowering when shaping is needed. Wear gloves because short thornlike branches occur.
Landscape Uses
Use in wildlife gardens, naturalized borders, screening groups, or as a spring-flowering specimen. Keep it away from tight walkways and formal beds where suckering becomes difficult to manage.
Best Planting Time
Fall and winter offer the best establishment conditions. Maintain a weed-free mulch ring during the first year.
Wildlife Value
Flowers feed early pollinators. Fruit attracts birds and other wildlife. The dense branching provides nesting and protective cover.
