Overview
Clusia, also called autograph tree, is a broadleaf evergreen with thick glossy leaves and strong tolerance for heat, wind, drought, and salt. It is native to extreme South Florida and the Caribbean. Tampa landscapes use it mainly as a substantial hedge or screening plant.
Mature Size and Growth
Unpruned plants grow 20 to 30 feet tall and nearly as wide. Hedge pruning holds them near 6 to 12 feet, but the large leaves and heavy stems need generous bed depth.
Where to Use It
Use Clusia for privacy hedges, pool screening, coastal properties, and bold evergreen structure. Place it several feet from walks, foundations, utilities, and narrow side-yard access.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Water deeply during establishment. Mature plants tolerate drought and salt exposure, but constant saturation promotes root problems.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant during spring or early summer in Central Florida so roots develop before cool weather. Prune after warm-season growth flushes. Keep the hedge base slightly wider than the top so lower foliage receives light.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers and fruit support insects and wildlife in warm areas. Dense foliage provides year-round screening and strong hurricane-resistant texture when plants are properly rooted and maintained.
Important Considerations
Clusia is cold sensitive around Tampa and often suffers leaf or stem damage during freezes. Milky sap can irritate skin. Fruit and fallen leaves create cleanup near pools. Learn more through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
