Overview

Coconut palm is an iconic tropical palm with a tall ringed trunk, long arching feather fronds, and large edible coconuts.

Mature Size and Habit

In suitable climates it can exceed 50 feet tall with a canopy more than 20 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a dramatic coastal or tropical specimen only where there is generous clearance from buildings, roads, walks, and overhead utilities.

Sunlight

Full sun is essential for a strong crown and trunk.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

It prefers well-drained sandy soil with regular moisture and tolerates coastal salt. Avoid planting in chronically wet, compacted soil.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant during warm late spring or summer so roots establish before winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Use a palm-specific fertilizer, remove only dead fronds, and have heavy fruit clusters managed by qualified professionals when they could endanger people or property.

Wildlife Value

The crown provides shelter for birds, and flowers can support pollinating insects.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Coconut palm is cold tender in Tampa. Prolonged temperatures below about 40°F and freezing weather can cause serious injury or death.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Falling coconuts and heavy fronds can cause severe injury or property damage. Do not place fruiting palms over roofs, parking areas, pools, or busy walkways.

Invasive Concerns

It is not native to Florida and is not generally treated as an invasive landscape plant. Monitor for volunteer seedlings.
