Overview
Cocoplum is a durable Florida native evergreen shrub with rounded, glossy leaves and small white flowers followed by edible white, pink, or purple fruit. It stays attractive throughout the year and performs especially well in warm Central Florida landscapes.
Mature Size and Growth
Most landscape forms reach 4 to 10 feet tall and wide, though unpruned plants can grow larger. Its dense branching responds well to selective pruning and makes an effective hedge or screen.
Where to Use It
Use cocoplum for privacy hedges, foundation beds, pool-area screening, coastal-style gardens, and informal native borders. Allow enough room for its natural width to reduce frequent shearing.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade. It accepts sandy or well-drained soils and becomes drought tolerant after establishment. Water deeply during the first growing season, then irrigate only during extended dry periods.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through early spring in the Tampa area so roots establish before summer heat. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep without touching the stems. Prune lightly after new growth rather than cutting repeatedly into bare wood.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers support pollinators and the fruit feeds birds and other wildlife. The evergreen foliage provides year-round cover and structure.
Important Considerations
Cold snaps can damage tender tips in colder inland locations. Choose a protected site north of Tampa and avoid constantly wet soil. Learn more from the Florida Native Plant Society.
