Overview
Confederate jasmine, also called star jasmine, is an evergreen Asian vine prized for glossy leaves and intensely fragrant white pinwheel flowers in spring. It is widely grown in Tampa and Central Florida but is not native to Florida.
Mature Size and Growth
Supported vines often reach 15 to 25 feet. When used as a groundcover, stems form a dense mat roughly 1 to 2 feet deep and spread steadily by trailing growth.
Where to Use It
Train it over an arbor, fence, trellis, or privacy screen, or use it on a broad bank where mowing is difficult. Place flowering vines near outdoor living areas where the fragrance is appreciated.
Light, Soil, and Water
Full sun to partial shade is suitable, with stronger flowering in brighter sites. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and water consistently during establishment. Established vines tolerate short dry periods.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through spring. Provide strong support from the start and guide new shoots while flexible. Prune immediately after flowering to control size without removing the following season's display.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
The fragrant flowers attract insect visitors, while the dense evergreen foliage provides a polished screen and year-round visual structure.
Important Considerations
Milky sap can irritate sensitive skin. Keep vines away from weak gutters, shutters, and small shrubs they could cover. Review vine selection and care through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
