Overview
Copperleaf is a nonnative tropical shrub grown for broad leaves patterned in copper, bronze, red, pink, and green. The foliage provides year-round color in warm protected Tampa locations.
Mature Size
Unpruned plants often reach 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. Compact cultivars remain smaller.
Light and Water
Full sun produces the richest color. Light shade works with greener foliage. Water regularly during establishment and prolonged dry periods.
Soil and Drainage
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Mulch helps keep roots evenly moist during summer heat.
Care
Prune during warm weather to control height and encourage dense branching. Avoid repeated hard pruning late in fall.
Landscape Uses
Use as a colorful hedge, tropical backdrop, pool-area accent, or large container specimen.
Best Planting Time
Spring after cold risk passes is safest. Early fall works in protected areas.
Tampa Notes
Copperleaf is sensitive to frost and cold wind. Place it near a warm wall or sheltered courtyard when possible.
