Overview

Creeping fig is a vigorous Asian evergreen vine with small juvenile leaves that cling tightly to masonry through adhesive rootlets. Mature upper growth develops larger leaves and fruiting branches.

Mature Size and Growth

The vine climbs 20 feet or more and spreads rapidly once established. It forms a dense green surface but requires routine trimming to keep it within assigned boundaries.

Where to Use It

Use on sound masonry walls, concrete garden structures, and sturdy privacy surfaces. It also works as a groundcover in contained areas. Keep it away from wood siding, roofs, gutters, windows, and weak mortar.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in sun or shade. Moist, well-drained soil supports quick establishment, though rooted vines tolerate short dry periods. Avoid constantly saturated soil.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Plant in spring or early summer. Guide young stems against the wall until they attach. Trim several times during the warm season and remove growth before it reaches painted trim or rooflines.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

Dense foliage softens hard walls and provides cover for small wildlife. Its main design value is a living green surface in courtyards and narrow urban spaces.

Important Considerations

Creeping fig is not native to Florida. Adhesive roots damage paint, stucco, mortar, and wood during removal. Sap can irritate skin, and mature vines become woody and heavy. Review vine care at UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
