Overview
Crown of thorns is a drought-tolerant succulent shrub from Madagascar with spiny stems, small leaves, and colorful red, pink, yellow, or white bracts. It flowers for long periods in warm sunny sites.
Mature Size and Growth
Most landscape plants reach 2 to 5 feet tall and wide, though cultivar size varies. Growth is slow to moderate and becomes densely branched with occasional pruning.
Where to Use It
Use in sunny raised beds, rock gardens, protected containers, and dry accent plantings. Set it well back from walks, pools, play spaces, and maintenance routes.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun and sharply drained soil. Water new plants until established, then allow soil to dry between cycles. Wet roots lead quickly to rot.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant in spring or early summer. Prune during warm weather using gloves and eye protection. Clean tools after contact with milky sap.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Long-lasting bracts provide dependable color and flowers attract some insect visitors. Its wildlife value remains modest.
Important Considerations
Crown of thorns is not native to Florida. Sharp thorns cause injury, and milky latex is toxic and strongly irritating. Cold and wet soil cause decline. Learn about succulent care through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
