Overview

Dahoon holly is a graceful Florida native evergreen tree valued for glossy foliage, a narrow upright form, and bright red berries on female plants. It performs well throughout Tampa and Central Florida when the site has adequate moisture.

Mature Size

Expect 20 to 30 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide. Growth stays relatively narrow, which makes this tree useful where a broad canopy would overwhelm the space.

Light and Water

Plant in full sun or partial shade. Keep young trees evenly moist. Established trees tolerate short dry periods but look best with reliable irrigation during extended drought.

Soil and Drainage

Dahoon holly accepts acidic sand, loam, and seasonally wet soil. It is an excellent choice for low areas and rain gardens. Avoid highly alkaline soil, which often causes pale foliage.

Care

Prune lightly to develop one strong trunk and remove crossing branches. Heavy shearing ruins the natural form. Mulch the root zone while keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Landscape Uses

Use it as a small specimen tree, near ponds, in rain gardens, or as a vertical accent between buildings. Allow room for the mature canopy and keep it away from overhead utilities.

Best Planting Time

Plant during fall through early spring for easier establishment. Summer planting also works when irrigation remains consistent.

Wildlife Value

The flowers support pollinators, and female trees produce berries used by birds. A nearby male holly improves fruit production.
