Overview
Dipladenia (Mandevilla sanderi) is a compact mandevilla with glossy leaves and trumpet flowers through much of the warm season, bringing vivid color to Tampa entries and patios.
Mature Size and Habit
Most forms mound or lightly twine 2 to 4 feet high and wide; stems climb farther on support or spill attractively over container edges
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in containers, mixed borders, hanging baskets, or on a small trellis, with protection from heavy foot traffic and broken stems
Sunlight
Full sun supports the best flowering; light afternoon shade helps during extreme heat, while heavy shade causes fewer blooms and stretched growth
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Use a loose, well-drained soil and water when the surface starts to dry; saturated roots and water-filled saucers quickly cause decline
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring gives Dipladenia mild establishment weather in Tampa; warm-season planting also works with dependable irrigation and close monitoring.
Pruning and Maintenance
Pinch tips to encourage branching, remove damaged stems, train vines gently, and inspect for whiteflies, mealybugs, scale, and mites
Wildlife Value
Nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds; pair this nonnative plant with Florida native nectar and host species
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Dipladenia handles heat well but suffers near 40 degrees Fahrenheit; protect it from freezes and drying winter wind in inland locations
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Broken stems release irritating milky latex; wear gloves, wash tools, and keep the plant away from chewing pets and active play spaces
Invasive Concerns
Mandevilla sanderi is nonnative but is not generally treated as invasive in Florida; remove volunteers and contain discarded stems
