Overview

Downy jasmine is an evergreen, loosely growing shrub with softly textured foliage and clusters of white star-shaped flowers.

Mature Size and Habit

Unpruned plants can reach roughly 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, with long arching shoots. It can be maintained smaller through selective pruning or supported against a sturdy structure, although it does not attach like a true clinging vine.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as an informal screen, flowering hedge, tropical backdrop, or large foundation accent.

Sunlight

Full sun to partial sun supports flowering. A site with morning sun and light afternoon shade can work well in Tampa.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in well-drained soil. Water regularly while roots establish, then irrigate during extended dry periods rather than on a rigid daily schedule. Avoid low beds that stay wet after storms and maintain a mulch ring clear of the main stems.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Spring through early fall provides warm soil for rooting, with spring offering time to establish before winter. Newly planted specimens need close moisture checks in summer.

Pruning and Maintenance

Shorten long shoots after a bloom flush and remove old, tangled, or ground-layering stems. Selective cuts preserve a natural flowering face better than constant shearing. Inspect dense plants for scale, whiteflies, and reduced airflow.

Wildlife Value

Flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other small pollinators.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Downy jasmine handles Central Florida heat well after establishment. Frost can discolor leaves and damage exposed tips, with more serious injury during a hard freeze. Protect young plants and postpone pruning until new spring growth begins.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major aggressive-root or thorn issue is typical, but long stems can obstruct walks and may root where they contact moist soil. Do not ingest ornamental plant material. Leave clearance from structures, utilities, and neighboring property.

Invasive Concerns

UF/IFAS sources describe downy jasmine as nonnative with low invasion risk, but vigorous growth still deserves monitoring.
