Overview

Emerald Green Arborvitae is a narrow, pyramidal evergreen with dense emerald foliage and a formal upright habit. It creates a clean vertical accent and year-round screening where climate and soil conditions support healthy growth.

Mature Size and Habit

It generally reaches 10 to 15 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Its naturally narrow form requires less shearing than many hedge plants, though growth in Tampa may be slower or less dense than in cooler regions.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it for a narrow privacy screen, formal hedge, entry accent, or large container. Avoid placing it in exposed heat pockets, poorly drained beds, or locations where reflected heat comes from pavement and walls.

Sunlight

Full sun to partial sun supports dense growth. In the Tampa area, light afternoon protection can reduce heat stress, especially during the first year after installation.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Provide fertile, well-drained soil and consistent irrigation. The root zone should stay evenly moist during establishment without remaining waterlogged. Mulch helps moderate hot soil temperatures.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Cooler fall through early spring weather offers the best establishment window. Avoid installing during extreme summer heat unless dependable irrigation and afternoon protection are available.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune lightly to preserve the natural narrow form. Do not cut deeply into old brown wood. Monitor irrigation, mites, and foliage browning during prolonged hot or humid weather.

Wildlife Value

Dense evergreen foliage can provide limited shelter and nesting cover for small birds. The plant is used mainly for screening and formal structure rather than significant nectar or fruit production.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Cold is rarely the main concern in Tampa. Prolonged heat, humidity, warm nights, and wet soils create greater stress. This cool-climate evergreen needs careful placement and attentive establishment.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No aggressive root problem is expected when proper spacing is used. Avoid planting where mature width will block walkways, windows, utilities, or service access.

Invasive Concerns

Emerald Green Arborvitae is not native to Florida and is not considered invasive in maintained landscapes. Its primary local concern is climate suitability rather than unwanted spread.
