Overview

Encore Carnival Azalea (Rhododendron hybrid 'Conlet' (Autumn Carnival)) is a non-native shrub suited to Tampa landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

Expect roughly 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, with a compact evergreen habit and recurring displays of medium-pink, semi-double flowers. Growth is slow.

Best Landscape Uses

Its lower size fits under windows, along walkways, in layered borders, and in large containers. Keep the plant back from heat-radiating pavement and leave room for air movement after summer rain.

Sunlight

Bright morning sun and light afternoon shade support strong flowering in Tampa. More sun is acceptable with dependable irrigation, while dense shade reduces flower production and encourages open growth.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. High-pH fill, shell, concrete runoff, and chronically wet beds cause yellow foliage and weak roots; keep the shallow root flare slightly above grade.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

October through early spring offers easy establishment. Summer planting requires reliable drainage and frequent root-ball checks.

Pruning and Maintenance

Use selective tip pruning after the spring bloom instead of frequent shearing. Monitor lace bugs beneath leaves, spider mites during dry weather, and Phytophthora root problems where drainage is poor.

Wildlife Value

Repeated flowers extend nectar and pollen availability for bees and butterflies. Protect active blooms from unnecessary pesticide sprays and combine this azalea with native flowering plants for broader wildlife value.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Autumn Carnival handles Tampa heat when soil moisture stays consistent and roots receive mulch protection. A severe freeze can injure tender tips, while summer drought and reflected heat are the more common local problems.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Azalea foliage, flowers, and stems are toxic if swallowed by people or animals. Do not place dropped clippings where pets graze, and use gloves when pruning if you are sensitive to plant material.

Invasive Concerns

This cultivated hybrid is non-native but is not regarded as an invasive landscape plant in Florida. Dispose of trimmings responsibly and remove any unexpected seedlings outside the maintained bed.
