Overview
Fakahatchee grass is a large Florida native bunchgrass with broad arching blades and tall flower spikes. It creates a bold fountain shape and gives large Central Florida landscapes strong movement and texture.
Mature Size and Growth
Standard plants commonly reach 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. Dwarf Fakahatchee grass is a separate landscape choice with a smaller footprint. Confirm which form is being purchased before calculating spacing.
Where to Use It
Use it beside ponds, in large rain gardens, as a background mass, around commercial properties, or in broad native borders. Its scale suits large beds better than narrow foundations.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates moist soil and seasonal wetness but also handles moderate dry periods once established. Deep watering during establishment develops a strong root system.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant in spring or fall. Cut old foliage back to roughly 12 inches in late winter before fresh growth starts. Wear gloves because blade edges feel coarse. Divide mature clumps during the cool season or early spring.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
The foliage provides cover, while seed and plant structure support wildlife. Large clumps stabilize soil near drainage areas and soften hard pond or retention-basin edges.
Important Considerations
Standard Fakahatchee grass overwhelms small beds and might obstruct windows or walkways. Plan for full mature width. Avoid frequent summer shearing because cut leaves look blunt and flower production drops. Learn more from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
