Overview
False Agave is a bold tropical succulent with long, arching green leaves arranged in a fountainlike rosette.
Mature Size and Habit
A well-grown plant commonly reaches 4 to 7 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide.
Best Landscape Uses
Place it as a specimen in a tropical garden, broad median, poolside bed, or large courtyard where its scale can be appreciated.
Sunlight
Full sun to bright partial sun is suitable. Strong light keeps growth compact, while some afternoon protection can reduce leaf scorch on very exposed sites immediately after nursery production.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Use loose, well-drained soil and avoid sites with standing water. Irrigate during establishment, then allow the root zone to partly dry between waterings.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring is the most forgiving planting window in Central Florida.
Pruning and Maintenance
Cut away spent lower leaves at their base and remove unwanted plantlets. Never top or shear the rosette.
Wildlife Value
The foliage has limited direct wildlife value. When an old plant blooms, the tall flower structure may attract pollinating insects, though the display is infrequent and should not be the main reason for planting.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
False Agave thrives in heat and handles coastal exposure once established. Frost may burn leaves and a hard freeze can damage the crown.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
The long leaves can crowd paths and the sap may irritate skin or eyes. Give the plant generous clearance from doors, walks, play spaces, pets, and service areas.
Invasive Concerns
Furcraea can produce numerous plantlets on the flower stalk. It is not a routine prohibited landscape plant in Florida, but gardeners should remove and contain volunteer plants before they spread beyond the bed.
