Overview
Firecracker plant is a nonnative cascading perennial with fine rushlike stems covered in red tubular flowers. It blooms for long periods and attracts hummingbirds.
Mature Size
Plants form mounds about 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.
Light and Water
Full sun produces the heaviest flowering. Light shade is acceptable. Water during establishment, then provide moderate irrigation during drought.
Soil and Drainage
Use well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Avoid low wet beds.
Care
Cut back long or tired stems during warm weather to renew growth. Avoid tight shearing, which removes flowers and creates a woody surface.
Landscape Uses
Use above retaining walls, on slopes, in large containers, or as a flowing border accent.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall works well.
Wildlife and Tampa Notes
Flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Hard freezes may damage stems, but protected established plants often regrow from the base.
