Overview
Firepower Nandina is a compact foliage shrub valued for soft green summer growth that turns orange and red in cooler weather. Its low rounded form fits small foundation beds and formal borders.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants generally remain 18 to 24 inches tall and spread about 2 feet wide. The cultivar stays compact and usually produces little to no fruit.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in repeated border groups, small foundation beds, containers, and beneath open-canopy trees. Massing several plants creates a stronger color effect than scattering single specimens.
Sunlight
Full sun produces the strongest red color, while partial sun protects foliage near reflective walls. Deep shade results in greener leaves and a looser habit.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in moist but well-drained soil and irrigate regularly through establishment. Once rooted, avoid both extended drought and saturated beds.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring provides mild establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also works when irrigation is dependable and the root zone is checked frequently.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove old stems at the base when renewal is needed and avoid shearing the top into a box. Watch for scale, mites, nutrient stress, and root decline.
Wildlife Value
Firepower provides limited wildlife value because it rarely flowers or fruits. Use Florida-native groundcovers and flowering shrubs nearby to strengthen habitat.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It tolerates Tampa heat with adequate moisture and develops better red color during cooler months. Hot dry wind and reflected heat can scorch foliage.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Nandina foliage and berries contain compounds that are toxic if eaten. Firepower is usually nonfruiting, but keep plant material away from children, pets, and livestock.
Invasive Concerns
Nandina domestica is listed as invasive in parts of Florida. This compact cultivar is less likely to fruit, yet gardeners should monitor for seedlings and consider native alternatives.

For site-specific guidance, review current UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommendations and confirm local placement, irrigation, and maintenance requirements before installation.
