Overview
Flax lily is an evergreen Australian perennial with arching strap-shaped leaves. Variegated cultivars carry cream or white stripes and produce small blue-violet flowers followed by decorative berries.
Mature Size and Growth
Most landscape forms reach 18 to 30 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Clumps spread slowly from underground stems.
Where to Use It
Use beneath palms, along shaded foundations, beside walkways, in mass plantings, or as a foliage accent in containers. Repetition creates a clean, organized appearance.
Light, Soil, and Water
Partial shade or filtered sun produces the best foliage around Tampa. Harsh afternoon sun can scorch variegated leaves. Plant in well-drained soil and water moderately during establishment.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through spring. Remove old leaves individually or cut tired clumps back before spring growth. Divide crowded plants during the cool season.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers and berries offer minor wildlife value. The main benefit is dependable foliage color in shaded locations where flowering plants often struggle.
Important Considerations
Flax lily is not native to Florida. Leaf spot becomes severe with overhead irrigation, crowded growth, and poor airflow. Avoid wetting foliage late in the day. Review landscape plant care through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
