Overview
Florida flame azalea is a deciduous native shrub known for fragrant yellow, orange, or orange-red flowers that open before or with the spring leaves. It brings a strong seasonal display to shaded Central Florida gardens and differs from the evergreen azaleas commonly used as clipped foundation shrubs.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants generally reach 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. The habit is upright and open, with multiple slender stems. Growth is moderate and the plant looks best when allowed to retain its natural layered form.
Best Landscape Uses
Use as a woodland-edge specimen, under high tree canopy, beside a shaded patio, or in a native shrub border. Place it where the spring flowers are easy to see and where deciduous winter appearance fits the design. Avoid hot reflected locations against west-facing walls.
Sunlight, Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Bright filtered light or morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal around Tampa. Plant in acidic, organic soil that drains well but stays evenly moist. The fine root system needs oxygen and declines in compacted or saturated soil. Irrigate during dry periods and use pine bark or leaf mulch to cool the root zone.
Best Planting Season for Tampa
Plant from late fall through early spring. Cooler temperatures reduce transplant stress and allow roots to establish before summer heat. Set the top of the root ball slightly above grade and never bury the crown beneath soil or deep mulch.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after flowering because next season's buds develop on older growth. Remove dead, rubbing, or poorly placed stems at their origin. Avoid routine shearing. Monitor lace bugs in overly sunny sites and root problems where drainage is poor.
Wildlife Value
The fragrant tubular flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other early-season pollinators. Native foliage and branching also contribute shelter within a layered habitat planting.
Toxicity, Thorns, Roots, and Invasive Concerns
All parts of azaleas are toxic if ingested by people, dogs, cats, or livestock. The plant has no thorns. Roots are shallow, fine, and nonaggressive, so keep digging and heavy foot traffic away from the root zone. Florida flame azalea is native and not invasive. See verified details from the Florida Native Plant Society.
