Overview

Florida privet is a Florida native evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub or small tree with fine-textured leaves, subtle flowers, and dark fruit. Unlike invasive Asian privets, this species belongs in Florida-native landscape designs.

Mature Size and Growth

It generally grows 10 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide, though pruning keeps it lower. Growth is moderate and the dense branching responds well to shaping.

Where to Use It

Use it as a privacy hedge, small specimen tree, foundation background, wildlife screen, or salt-tolerant coastal shrub. Its fine foliage fits formal landscapes while its natural form also works in mixed native borders.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It tolerates sand, limestone-influenced soil, salt spray, and drought after establishment. Water regularly during the first growing season.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Plant from fall through spring. Prune after the main growth flush or selectively during winter. Avoid constant tight shearing if flowers and fruit are desired. Space it according to mature width.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

Small flowers support insects and the blue-black fruit feeds birds. Dense branches provide cover without the ecological risks linked with invasive privet species.

Important Considerations

Male and female flowers might occur on separate plants, so fruit production varies. Confirm the scientific name at purchase because the common name privet is applied to several unrelated and sometimes invasive plants. Learn more from Florida Native Plant Society.
