Overview
Forest Green anise is a selected form of Florida-native Illicium parviflorum, valued for dense evergreen foliage and a naturally full outline.
Mature Size and Habit
Expect an upright, rounded shrub about 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide unless it is selectively pruned.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a privacy screen, woodland-edge specimen, foundation backdrop, or evergreen mass in sheltered Tampa gardens.
Sunlight
Partial sun or bright filtered shade gives the best balance of density and leaf quality.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in acidic to neutral soil that drains but holds even moisture. Water deeply during establishment, then irrigate during extended dry periods.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring is preferred because cooler weather reduces transplant stress and supports root growth before summer.
Pruning and Maintenance
Little pruning is required beyond removing damaged or crossing branches. Lightly shape after spring growth if needed.
Wildlife Value
The evergreen branching offers cover for small birds.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Well adapted to Central Florida heat and humidity, it also tolerates ordinary winter chills once established.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Do not confuse this ornamental with culinary star anise. Plant parts should not be eaten.
Invasive Concerns
This Florida-native species is not considered invasive. Site it where normal garden management prevents unwanted basal growth from crowding nearby smaller plants.
