Overview
Foxtail fern is a nonnative ornamental asparagus with dense upright plumes of fine green foliage. It is not a true fern. Its strong texture works well in modern and tropical Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size
Expect 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Underground storage roots help established plants handle brief dry periods.
Light and Water
Plant in partial sun, bright shade, or morning sun with afternoon protection. Water regularly during establishment. Established plants prefer moderate irrigation without constantly wet soil.
Soil and Drainage
Use well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Raised beds and containers help where drainage is poor.
Care
Remove old or damaged stems at the base instead of clipping the tips. Wear gloves because small thorns occur along mature stems. Divide crowded clumps when growth presses against nearby plants.
Landscape Uses
Use in repeating groups, large containers, mixed borders, or as a textural accent beneath palms. Keep it back from narrow walkways.
Best Planting Time
Spring and early fall offer good conditions. Summer installation works in shaded beds with careful watering.
Tampa Notes
Hard freezes can burn foliage, but established roots often send up new growth. Red berries are not intended for consumption and should remain away from pets and children.
