Overview

Francis Mason Abelia is a compact evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub valued for bright golden foliage and small fragrant flowers. In Tampa landscapes it adds dependable color without relying on seasonal bedding plants, and its fine texture works well beside darker green shrubs.

Mature Size and Habit

This selection normally reaches 3–6 feet tall and 3–6 feet wide. It develops a rounded, arching outline and responds well to selective pruning when a tighter foundation shape is needed.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in low hedges, mixed borders, foundation beds, repeated masses, or large containers. Give each plant enough room for air movement and its natural arching shape instead of forcing it into a narrow clipped box.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the strongest gold foliage and best flowering. Partial sun is suitable, especially where late-afternoon heat reflects from pavement or walls, but heavy shade reduces color and flowering.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in amended, well-drained soil and keep the root flare slightly above grade. Water deeply during establishment, then irrigate when the upper soil begins drying. Avoid constantly wet soil and frequent shallow watering.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring gives roots time to establish before intense summer heat. Warm-season installation also works when irrigation is monitored closely and mulch stays several inches away from the stems.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune lightly after a flowering cycle and remove damaged or crossing growth as needed. Avoid repeated hard shearing, which creates a thin outer shell and weak interior growth. Monitor for scale, aphids, and root stress in wet beds.

Wildlife Value

The small tubular flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. Dense branching offers limited shelter for small wildlife, although this cultivar is chosen primarily for ornamental performance.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants handle Tampa heat when roots receive consistent moisture and drainage. A hard freeze may burn exposed tips, but healthy plants often recover with spring growth. Protect young plants from reflected afternoon heat.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

The root system is fibrous and is not considered aggressive. Maintain clearance from walkways so arching stems do not obstruct traffic. Use ordinary care around pets and children and avoid allowing plant material to be eaten.

Invasive Concerns

This ornamental hybrid is not native to Florida and is not generally treated as an invasive landscape plant. Maintain it within the intended bed and remove any unwanted volunteer growth.
