Overview
Frogfruit is a low Florida native ground cover with small leaves and tiny button-shaped flowers. It spreads into a dense mat and supports several butterfly species.
Mature Size
Foliage generally stays 3 to 6 inches tall. Spreading stems root as they travel and cover open soil quickly under favorable conditions.
Light and Water
Full sun produces the most flowers. Partial shade is acceptable. Water during establishment. Mature plants handle short dry periods and periodic moisture.
Soil and Drainage
Frogfruit adapts to sand, loam, and many disturbed soils. It performs best where water drains between rain events.
Care
Trim or edge spreading stems where a defined boundary is needed. Occasional mowing at a high setting keeps large areas tidy.
Landscape Uses
Use between stepping stones, along pond edges, in pollinator lawns, or as a living ground cover in sunny beds. It tolerates light foot traffic.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall supports rapid rooting. Keep new plugs evenly moist until runners establish.
Wildlife Value
Flowers feed small pollinators and serve as nectar sources for several butterflies.
