Overview

Gardenia is an evergreen shrub treasured for glossy dark foliage and intensely fragrant white flowers from late spring into summer. It brings classic Southern character to Tampa landscapes, though it is native to Asia rather than Florida.

Mature Size and Growth

Size ranges from 2-foot dwarf cultivars to shrubs 6 to 8 feet tall and wide. Match the cultivar to the planting space so repeated hard pruning is unnecessary.

Where to Use It

Use near entries, patios, windows, and walkways where the fragrance is enjoyed. Gardenias also work in mixed shrub borders, foundation beds, or containers placed in bright filtered light.

Light, Soil, and Water

Morning sun and light afternoon shade are ideal. Gardenias require acidic, organic, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Water at the root zone, avoid soggy conditions, and use mulch to moderate soil temperature.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Plant in fall through early spring. Feed with a fertilizer labeled for acid-loving plants based on soil needs. Prune soon after flowering, since late pruning removes developing flower buds.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

Fragrant blooms provide a memorable focal point and attract insect visitors. Dense evergreen leaves give beds a refined backdrop throughout the year.

Important Considerations

Yellow leaves often indicate high soil pH, drainage trouble, or nutrient imbalance. Watch for scale, whiteflies, and sooty mold. Choose a site with good airflow and review shrub care through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
