Overview

Giant Crinum Lily is a nonnative tropical bulbous perennial with massive arching leaves and fragrant white spiderlike flowers. Its scale creates an immediate tropical effect, but the plant needs generous room and careful placement because all parts contain toxic alkaloids.

Mature Size and Habit

A mature clump commonly reaches 4 to 6 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide. Large bulbs produce offsets, and an established colony can become broader. Flower stalks rise above the foliage during warm weather.

Best Landscape Uses

Use as a large tropical focal clump, poolside backdrop with safe clearance, or bold screen in a spacious bed. It is too large for narrow entries and small foundation pockets. Keep it away from play areas and places where pets chew plants.

Sunlight

Full sun to partial shade is suitable. Light afternoon shade can reduce leaf stress in the hottest reflected locations, while too much shade weakens flowering.

Soil and Drainage

Rich, moisture-retentive but drained soil supports the best growth. The plant tolerates brief wet periods, yet bulbs can rot in stagnant or compacted soil. Set the bulb neck correctly and do not bury the crown under mulch.

Irrigation

Provide regular water during establishment and warm active growth. Established clumps tolerate short dry spells but look best with consistent moisture. Reduce irrigation during cool periods when growth slows.

Best Planting Season

Spring through early summer is the best planting window in Tampa and Central Florida. Warm soil encourages quick rooting and gives new plants time to establish before winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove yellow or damaged leaves at the base and cut spent flower stalks before unwanted seed develops. Divide offsets only when the colony becomes overcrowded. Wear gloves and clean cutting tools after use.

Wildlife Value

Fragrant flowers may attract moths and other pollinating insects. This is primarily an ornamental foliage plant and should not replace native host or nectar plants in a wildlife-focused design.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It thrives in heat and humidity. Frost can burn foliage in Tampa, although established bulbs often resprout when warm weather returns. Protect new plants from hard freezes and cold wind.

Toxicity, Thorns, and Roots

All parts are poisonous if eaten, with the bulb presenting the greatest concern. Sap may irritate skin. Leaves are not thorny, although their tips and coarse edges can be uncomfortable. Thick bulbs and offsets expand the clump but roots are not normally destructive to structures.

Invasive and Placement Concerns

This species is not native to Florida and has naturalized in warm regions. Remove seeds and unwanted offsets, and do not discard bulbs in natural areas. Allow clearance from paths because large leaves bend outward when wet or windblown.
