Overview
Glossy abelia is a rounded, arching evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub valued for glossy foliage and a long season of small, lightly fragrant tubular flowers.
Mature Size and Habit
Most forms mature about 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. Long flexible stems create a graceful mound. Cultivars vary, so allow enough room for the selected form.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it for flowering hedges, foundation beds, borders, mass plantings, or a soft accent near patios.
Sunlight
Plant in full sun or partial sun. Strong light produces denser growth and more flowers. Afternoon shade helps reduce heat stress in exposed Tampa sites.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Use well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate irrigation. Established plants tolerate short dry periods. Avoid low areas where roots remain wet.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from October through early spring for easier establishment. Warm-season planting works when irrigation remains consistent.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after a bloom cycle or in late winter. Remove older stems at the base when rejuvenation is needed. Avoid repeated hard shearing.
Wildlife Value
Flowers support bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Severe heat, deep shade, or wet soil reduces density and flowering.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
No major toxicity, thorn, or aggressive-root concern is known. Keep enough clearance for its arching habit.
Invasive Concerns
This hybrid is not native to Florida and is not generally treated as invasive in managed landscapes.
