Overview

A compact tropical shrub grown for brilliant chartreuse to golden foliage that creates immediate contrast in South Tampa foundation beds and colorful landscape designs.

Mature Size and Habit

It commonly reaches 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide with a soft mounding form. Warm weather produces quick new growth.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a low hedge, border, foundation accent, mass planting, or container feature. The bright foliage works especially well beside dark green shrubs and ornamental stone.

Sunlight

Full sun develops the strongest golden color and compact habit. Partial sun is tolerated, but foliage becomes greener as shade increases.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly through establishment. Once rooted, it tolerates moderate dry periods but performs best with consistent moisture.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Spring through early fall is the best installation window because warm soil promotes rapid rooting. Avoid planting immediately before a forecast freeze.

Pruning and Maintenance

Tip-prune or lightly shear to maintain a dense mound. Schedule pruning before growth becomes woody and oversized, then remove cold damage in spring.

Wildlife Value

Small lavender flowers sometimes attract butterflies and bees, though frequent pruning can reduce bloom. The foliage remains its main landscape feature.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Heat and humidity produce strong growth. Frost can burn leaves and stems, but established plants often recover once warm spring weather returns.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Duranta fruit and foliage are toxic if eaten and pose a pet concern. Place the shrub away from areas where children or animals might sample plant material.

Invasive Concerns

Gold Mound is a managed ornamental cultivar. Remove volunteer seedlings and unwanted fruit, and keep it within maintained landscape beds.
