Overview
Golden dewdrop duranta is a nonnative tropical shrub with arching branches, violet-blue flowers, and hanging clusters of golden berries. It grows quickly in warm Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size
Unpruned plants may reach 10 to 15 feet tall and wide. Compact cultivars remain much smaller.
Light and Water
Full sun produces the most flowers. Water regularly during establishment and prolonged dry weather.
Soil and Drainage
Duranta adapts to many soils when drainage remains good. Avoid constantly wet beds.
Care
Prune during warm weather to control size and remove weak growth. Some plants develop short thorns, so wear gloves.
Landscape Uses
Use as a flowering screen, large accent shrub, espalier, or colorful backdrop in protected locations.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall is ideal.
Safety and Tampa Notes
Cold snaps may damage leaves and stems. Berries and foliage are toxic if eaten, so avoid pet and child activity areas. Remove unwanted seedlings.
