Overview
A tough Florida-native coastal evergreen with leathery green leaves, button-like fruit clusters, and exceptional tolerance for salt, wind, heat, and difficult urban sites.
Mature Size and Habit
Unpruned plants become multi-trunked trees 20 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. Regular pruning keeps them as dense hedges or compact screens.
Best Landscape Uses
Ideal for coastal hedges, privacy screens, windbreaks, erosion control, parking areas, and sculptural specimens. Its durability makes it useful near exposed waterfront sites.
Sunlight
Full sun gives the densest foliage and strongest branching. Partial sun is acceptable, although growth becomes looser.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
It accepts sand, limestone, alkaline soil, periodic flooding, and drought after establishment. Water deeply at first, then avoid constant wet irrigation.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant in spring through early fall so roots establish during warm weather. It also installs successfully in mild winter periods in protected Tampa locations.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune selectively to build strong trunks or shear regularly when used as a hedge. Large tree forms need branch-clearance and storm-structure management.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract small pollinators, while dense foliage and fruiting structures provide cover and food for birds and coastal wildlife.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Buttonwood thrives in heat, salt spray, wind, and reflected light. Hard freezes can burn foliage and young stems, so sheltered placement improves reliability.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Tree-form specimens develop substantial roots and need space from paving and structures. The plant produces regular leaf and fruit litter but has no major toxicity concern.
Invasive Concerns
Green buttonwood is a Florida native and not invasive. Seedlings rarely become troublesome in maintained residential landscapes.
