Overview

A compact evergreen shrub with thick, glossy, rounded leaves and a dense low habit that gives South Tampa landscapes a clean, finished tropical appearance.

Mature Size and Habit

It generally grows 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide in maintained landscapes. Unpruned plants broaden gradually and develop a sturdy mounded form.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it for foundation beds, low hedges, mass planting, courtyard accents, poolside beds, and large containers. Its deep green foliage pairs well with colorful tropical plants.

Sunlight

Full sun to partial sun produces dense growth. Some afternoon shade reduces heat stress in reflected locations beside walls, driveways, or pools.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in well-drained sand or amended landscape soil. Water consistently during establishment, then allow the upper soil to dry slightly between deep irrigation cycles.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from spring through early fall while soil is warm. Mild Tampa winters also work if the plant receives protection from unusual cold and steady establishment water.

Pruning and Maintenance

Light tip pruning maintains a rounded form and encourages branching. Avoid repeated severe shearing because selective cuts preserve larger leaves and a healthier natural texture.

Wildlife Value

The dense evergreen canopy offers shelter for small birds and beneficial insects. Its primary landscape value is structure and foliage rather than flowers or fruit.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Heat and humidity are well tolerated. Temperatures near freezing can damage foliage, so use protected urban sites and avoid exposed cold pockets.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Ficus sap can irritate sensitive skin, and roots should have room away from foundations, pavement, and small drains. Wear gloves when making extensive pruning cuts.

Invasive Concerns

The Green Island selection stays more compact than tree-form Indian laurel fig. Monitor volunteer growth and follow local guidance because the parent species has invasive concerns in parts of Florida.

For region-specific care guidance, review the UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions website and follow local watering rules.
