Overview
Harlequin Ti Plant is a colorful selection of Cordyline fruticosa. Glossy, arching leaves combine green, cream, orange, and pink striping for a bold tropical foliage display.
Mature Size and Habit
It develops several slender, ringed canes and a bushy upright crown, commonly reaching about 4–8 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide in a protected Florida landscape.
Best Landscape Uses
Use Harlequin as an accent, grouped tropical planting, foundation feature, poolside color plant away from splash, or large container specimen.
Sunlight
Bright partial sun or filtered shade gives the best color. Harsh afternoon sun can scorch variegated leaves, while deep shade can weaken growth and reduce color.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in organic, well-drained soil and keep it evenly moist during establishment. Irrigate when the upper soil dries, but never leave roots in saturated ground.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from spring through early fall while soil is warm. In Tampa, choose a sheltered bed; farther inland, a movable container is safer during winter.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove yellow leaves at the cane and trim freeze damage after spring growth begins. Tall canes can be shortened to encourage shoots; monitor for scale, mites, and mealybugs.
Wildlife Value
Small flowers and berries are possible, but Harlequin is grown primarily for foliage and offers limited wildlife value. Pair it with flowering Florida natives.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
This zone-10 tropical handles Florida heat and humidity but is cold-sensitive. Frost burns leaves and hard freezes may kill canes; protect it during cold events.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Ti plant is toxic to dogs and cats if eaten, so keep leaves and berries away from pets and children. Its fibrous roots are not aggressive; avoid salty spray and reflected heat.
Invasive Concerns
Cordyline fruticosa is not native to Florida. It is cultivated as an ornamental rather than an aggressive spreader; remove unwanted fruit and dispose of trimmings responsibly.
