Overview
Howardii Ligustrum is a dense evergreen shrub known for glossy mature foliage and bright yellow-gold new growth. It creates a formal hedge or bold foundation backdrop with strong year-round color.
Mature Size and Habit
Unpruned plants can become large shrubs or small multi-trunk trees. In hedges, regular selective pruning keeps growth dense while preserving the gold flush at the branch tips.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it for privacy, broad foundation masses, driveway screening, or as a trained specimen. Plan for mature width so repeated severe pruning does not become necessary.
Sunlight
Full sun gives the strongest gold color and tightest growth. Partial sun is acceptable, while deep shade creates thin growth and greener foliage.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in well-drained soil and water deeply during establishment. Avoid planting too low or allowing irrigation to keep the root zone continuously wet.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring provides mild establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also works when irrigation is dependable and the root zone is checked frequently.
Pruning and Maintenance
Use selective cuts rather than constant flat shearing, remove basal shoots when training a tree form, and inspect for scale, whiteflies, thrips, and leaf spots.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract pollinators and fruit can feed birds, although native shrubs provide stronger local habitat relationships. Remove flower clusters if unwanted seedlings are a concern.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Howardii Ligustrum handles Tampa heat and ordinary winters well. Severe freezes can burn new growth, and prolonged flooding causes root loss.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Fruit and foliage should not be eaten. Large plants can block sight lines and access, so keep them clear of corners, meters, windows, and narrow walks.
Invasive Concerns
Japanese privet is nonnative and related Ligustrum species have invasive concerns in parts of the Southeast. Prevent unwanted fruiting and remove volunteer seedlings promptly.
Helpful Resources
For site-specific guidance, review current UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommendations and confirm local placement, irrigation, and maintenance requirements before installation.
