Overview

Hoya australis is a nonnative evergreen vine with thick oval leaves and fragrant, waxy star-shaped flowers. Plain-green foliage distinguishes this entry from variegated selections.

Mature Size and Habit

A trained container plant commonly occupies about 3–5 feet of height and spread. Twining stems need support or space to trail, and dimensions depend on pruning.

Best Landscape Uses

Use a pot with a small trellis, a hanging planter, or a sheltered patio display. Containers are the practical choice for winter protection in Central Florida.

Sunlight

Give bright filtered light and gentle morning sun. Acclimate it gradually and shield leaves from intense afternoon exposure in Tampa's heat.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use a sharply draining, airy mix with bark. Water moderately during active growth and reduce watering in cool weather. Never leave the pot standing in water.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Repot in spring as warm growth resumes. For an outdoor display, wait until cold risk passes and choose a position protected from strong wind.

Pruning and Maintenance

Guide new stems onto their support and shorten overlong growth as needed. Leave old flower stalks in place for repeat bloom. Check for scale and mealybugs.

Wildlife Value

Fragrant flowers add interest, but do not assume dependable food or host value for Florida wildlife. Combine the display with locally appropriate native flowering plants.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

This is a tender tropical, not a freeze-hardy landscape vine. Move it into a warm bright room before cold fronts. Humid summer air helps only with good drainage.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Stems have no thorns. Keep trailing growth off paths, use a secure trellis, and prevent children or pets from chewing ornamental foliage or flowers.

Invasive Concerns

Its native range includes parts of Australasia and the western Pacific, not Florida. Keep vines within their support and dispose of cuttings responsibly.
