Overview

Indian hawthorn is a compact nonnative evergreen shrub with leathery leaves and spring flower clusters. It stays naturally rounded and works well in structured Tampa landscapes.

Mature Size

Most common cultivars reach 3 to 6 feet tall and wide. Dwarf selections remain smaller, so verify the cultivar before spacing.

Light and Water

Full sun produces dense growth and more flowers. Water during establishment, then provide irrigation during long dry periods.

Soil and Drainage

Well-drained soil is essential. Avoid low beds and frequent overhead irrigation.

Care

Prune selectively after flowering. Indian hawthorn is vulnerable to Entomosporium leaf spot, especially in crowded, shaded, or constantly wet locations. Provide airflow and avoid wetting foliage late in the day.

Landscape Uses

Use as a low hedge, foundation shrub, mass planting, or parking-area accent.

Best Planting Time

Fall through early spring reduces heat stress during establishment.

Tampa Notes

Choose disease-resistant cultivars and avoid installing large masses where leaf spot has been a recurring problem.
