Overview
Jamaican Caper is a Florida native evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy leaves, fragrant flowers that open white and age pink, and slender seed pods.
Mature Size and Habit
In cultivation it is often maintained 8 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, though an old specimen can become a small tree.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in a native garden, flowering hedge, privacy screen, coastal planting, or as a small specimen near a patio where the fragrance can be enjoyed.
Sunlight
Full sun supports dense growth and abundant flowers. Partial sun is also suitable, especially on hot western exposures, but heavy shade reduces flowering and can open the canopy.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Jamaican Caper accepts sandy and calcareous soils if drainage is good. Water regularly while roots establish, then reduce frequency.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from fall through early spring in Tampa and Central Florida for low-stress establishment.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after flowering to guide height or develop a small tree form. Avoid repeated shearing, which removes buds and hides the natural layered branching.
Wildlife Value
Fragrant flowers support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The plant is also associated with native butterfly activity and offers cover for birds, making it a useful component of a layered habitat planting.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It tolerates heat, salt air, and seasonal drought once established. Young plants can be injured by frost, so use a sheltered site in colder Central Florida pockets and protect during exceptional freezes.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
No major thorn or aggressive-root concern is typical. Provide routine clearance from buildings and utilities as the shrub matures.
Invasive Concerns
This species is native to Florida and is not an invasive concern in its natural range.
Helpful Resources
Review current Florida guidance through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions and the UF/IFAS Jamaican Caper profile. Confirm site-specific irrigation, cold protection, and placement needs before installation.
