Overview
Japanese blueberry is an evergreen Asian tree with dense glossy foliage, bronze-red new growth, and occasional older red leaves. It provides a formal upright appearance in Central Florida.
Mature Size and Growth
Trees commonly reach 30 to 40 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide, though clipped screens stay smaller with regular maintenance. Growth is moderate.
Where to Use It
Use as an evergreen specimen, tall screen, street-scale tree, or formal accent on large properties. Allow clearance from roofs, pavement, utilities, and small planting islands.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil. Water deeply during the first one to two years. Established trees tolerate moderate drought but perform poorly in saturated ground.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through spring. Train young trees to strong branch structure and use selective pruning. Avoid topping, which creates weak regrowth and destroys the natural form.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Small flowers and fruit offer limited wildlife use. The main landscape benefit is dense year-round screening and refined foliage.
Important Considerations
Japanese blueberry is not native to Florida. It outgrows small spaces, drops older red leaves seasonally, and sometimes develops leaf spotting in humid crowded sites. Find tree-selection guidance through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
