Overview

Japanese Cleyera is a polished evergreen shrub valued for glossy dark leaves and coppery red new growth. It gives South Tampa properties a dense, refined screen without relying on flowers for its main effect.

Mature Size and Habit

Unpruned plants can reach 12 to 20 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide. Regular selective pruning keeps the upright, layered habit closer to a practical hedge size.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it for privacy hedges, foundation planting, borders, courtyard screening, or a large container. Space it where the plant can mature without constant hard shearing.

Sunlight

Full sun, partial sun, and bright shade are suitable. Partial afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch and keeps foliage richer on hot reflected sites.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Consistent irrigation during establishment supports deep rooting, while prolonged saturation and strongly alkaline soil can cause decline or yellow foliage.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through spring offers mild establishment weather. Warm-season planting also succeeds when irrigation remains reliable and the root ball never dries completely.

Pruning and Maintenance

Pinch young tips or use selective cuts to build density. Avoid repeated deep shearing into bare wood, and watch occasionally for scale or leaf spot.

Wildlife Value

Small spring flowers serve visiting insects, and red fruit can interest birds. Dense evergreen branches provide useful shelter, though this Asian species does not replace native habitat plants.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants handle Tampa heat and ordinary winter weather. Young growth can scorch during unusual freezes or intense reflected sun.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Roots are usually manageable near buildings and walks. Allow adequate width beside entries and mechanical equipment so the mature hedge does not block access or airflow.

Invasive Concerns

UF/IFAS does not currently consider Japanese Cleyera a problem species. Monitor seedlings and keep fruiting growth within maintained beds.
