Overview
Jatropha is a tropical Cuban evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy foliage and clusters of red or pink flowers through much of the warm season. It performs best in protected Tampa microclimates.
Mature Size and Growth
Plants usually reach 8 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide. Selective pruning develops a multi-trunk tree form or maintains a full flowering shrub.
Where to Use It
Use as a flowering specimen, patio accent, pollinator feature, or warm-wall foundation plant. Give it room and protect it from north winds.
Light, Soil, and Water
Full sun encourages heavy flowering. Plant in well-drained soil and water during establishment. Mature plants tolerate brief drought but respond to deep irrigation during extended dry weather.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant in spring or early summer. Prune after cold danger passes and during active growth to shape the canopy. Remove crossing stems rather than repeatedly shearing the outside.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. The long bloom season supports frequent pollinator activity and gives landscapes dependable red color.
Important Considerations
Jatropha is not native to Florida and suffers freeze damage. Sap and seeds are toxic if eaten and sap irritates skin. Keep away from pets and children. Review tropical shrub guidance through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
