Overview

A fast-growing Florida-native oak with a broad rounded canopy and smooth narrow leaves that delivers substantial shade in spacious residential and commercial landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

Mature trees commonly reach 50 to 70 feet tall and 35 to 50 feet wide. The canopy expands quickly and needs room to develop balanced scaffold limbs.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a large shade tree, street-tree candidate where space permits, or native canopy anchor. It is poorly suited to tiny yards and narrow strips.

Sunlight

Full sun is preferred, though young trees tolerate partial sun. Open exposure supports a symmetrical crown and stronger branch attachments.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Laurel oak adapts to moist, acidic, well-drained soil and tolerates brief wet periods. Deep irrigation during establishment promotes a broad, resilient root system.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from late fall through early spring for the lowest stress. Summer planting is workable with consistent watering and attention to the root ball.

Pruning and Maintenance

Structural pruning during the first several years is important because rapid growth can create crowded or weak limbs. Mature trees need periodic professional inspection.

Wildlife Value

Acorns feed birds and mammals, and the large canopy provides nesting and shelter. Native oaks also support many caterpillars that sustain songbirds.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

The tree handles Tampa heat and humidity and tolerates typical winter lows. Older specimens are relatively short lived and deserve storm-season monitoring.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Keep well away from foundations, roofs, pools, sidewalks, and utilities. Large surface roots, heavy limbs, acorns, and leaf litter require thoughtful placement.

Invasive Concerns

Laurel oak is native and not invasive. Acorn seedlings can emerge in beds and lawns, but ordinary landscape maintenance controls them.
