Overview
Liriope is an Asian evergreen groundcover with narrow strap-like foliage and purple flower spikes. It creates a dependable grassy texture in areas where turf performs poorly.
Mature Size and Growth
Clumping Liriope muscari typically grows 12 to 18 inches tall and wide. Some cultivars remain compact. Creeping lilyturf belongs to a different species and spreads more aggressively.
Where to Use It
Use liriope as walkway edging, beneath trees, on shaded slopes, around utility areas, or in repeating masses. It handles root competition better than many flowering groundcovers.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in partial shade or filtered sun. It tolerates full sun with adequate moisture but might scorch in harsh reflected heat. Use well-drained soil and water consistently during establishment.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through spring. Cut old foliage back before new spring growth, taking care not to damage emerging shoots. Divide crowded clumps during the cool season or early spring.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers add seasonal color, while dense roots help hold soil. The evergreen foliage defines edges and reduces bare ground in difficult shaded beds.
Important Considerations
Liriope is not native to Florida. Confirm the species because Liriope spicata spreads by underground stems and becomes difficult to contain. Snails, scale, and crown rot appear in damp or crowded sites. Learn more from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
