Overview
A fast-growing native pine with long green needles, a straight trunk, and a high open crown that gives large Florida properties a natural woodland character.
Mature Size and Habit
It often grows 60 to 90 feet tall and 25 to 40 feet wide. Growth is rapid when young, so placement must account for its ultimate scale.
Best Landscape Uses
Best for large lots, native buffers, erosion control, windbreaks, and woodland restoration. It is not appropriate beneath utility lines or in tight foundation beds.
Sunlight
Full sun is required for strong growth and a balanced crown. Shaded trees become thin and lean toward available light.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Loblolly pine adapts to moist or moderately drained acidic soils. Water regularly during establishment, then rely mainly on rainfall except during prolonged drought.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Install from fall through early spring to encourage root growth before summer storms and heat. Stake only when needed and remove supports promptly.
Pruning and Maintenance
Maintain a single leader while young and remove dead or storm-damaged limbs as needed. Mature canopy work belongs with a qualified arborist.
Wildlife Value
Seeds feed birds and small wildlife, and the evergreen crown offers nesting and shelter. The tree also supports insects important to the local food web.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It tolerates Tampa heat, humidity, and ordinary winter cold. Large trees require routine storm-risk assessment because long limbs and tall crowns catch wind.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Give this large tree wide clearance from buildings, pools, pavement, septic systems, and overhead utilities. Falling cones, needles, and limbs create regular litter.
Invasive Concerns
Loblolly pine is native to Florida and not invasive. Natural seedlings can emerge in sunny disturbed soil and are readily managed while small.
