Overview

An iconic Florida-native pine with exceptionally long needles, large cones, and a sculptural open crown that connects landscapes to the region’s historic pine ecosystem.

Mature Size and Habit

Mature trees generally reach 60 to 80 feet tall and 25 to 35 feet wide. Young plants spend time in a low grass stage before making rapid vertical growth.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a specimen, restoration tree, woodland anchor, or habitat feature on spacious sunny properties. Its mature height demands open sky and ample setback.

Sunlight

Full, unobstructed sun is essential. Even moderate shade weakens growth, reduces vigor, and interferes with the natural form.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

It prefers deep, acidic, sharply drained sand and becomes highly drought tolerant after establishment. Avoid wet compacted soil and frequent shallow irrigation.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall and winter offer the best planting conditions in Central Florida. Keep the original root system intact and maintain even moisture while new roots expand.

Pruning and Maintenance

Minimal pruning is best. Remove only dead, broken, or poorly attached limbs and protect the terminal candle on young trees.

Wildlife Value

Longleaf pine supports exceptional wildlife diversity, including birds, pollinators, and insects associated with native pine communities. Needles also create valuable natural mulch.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It thrives in Florida heat and handles normal freezes. Properly rooted trees resist drought, though young specimens need protection from mower and string-trimmer damage.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Plant far from roofs, vehicles, pools, and utility lines because mature trees shed long needles, cones, and occasional limbs. Do not mound soil over the root flare.

Invasive Concerns

This is a Florida native with no invasive concern. Natural regeneration is limited in maintained landscapes unless open sandy soil is available.
