Overview
Mammy Croton is a compact tropical foliage shrub with narrow twisted leaves marked in red, orange, yellow, green, and burgundy. Its curled foliage creates texture and color throughout the year.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants commonly reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. The dense branching and smaller mature size make Mammy easier to fit into foundation beds than larger croton cultivars.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a colorful accent, in tropical groupings, beside entries, beneath palms, or in large containers. Repeating several plants creates a stronger design than isolated singles.
Sunlight
Bright light and morning sun produce the richest color. Harsh reflected afternoon heat can scorch leaves, while deep shade creates greener, weaker growth.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly during establishment. Crotons dislike both extended drought and saturated roots, so adjust irrigation to weather and drainage.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring provides mild establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also works when irrigation is dependable and the root zone is checked frequently.
Pruning and Maintenance
Pinch growing tips for density and remove cold-damaged stems after new growth begins. Monitor for scale, mealybugs, mites, thrips, and fungal leaf spots.
Wildlife Value
The insignificant flowers offer limited wildlife value. Pair Mammy Croton with native nectar plants and shrubs that provide fruit or shelter.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It performs well in Tampa heat and humidity but is sensitive to freezes, cold wind, and sudden changes in light. Protected sites retain foliage better in winter.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, and all parts are toxic if eaten. Wear gloves and keep cuttings away from children and pets.
Invasive Concerns
Mammy Croton is nonnative and is not generally invasive in Florida landscapes. Dispose of cuttings responsibly and remove any unwanted seedlings.
Helpful Resources
For site-specific guidance, review current UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommendations and confirm local placement, irrigation, and maintenance requirements before installation.
