Overview
Maui Yellow Ixora is a compact evergreen flowering shrub with glossy green foliage and rounded clusters of bright yellow blooms. It brings warm color to sunny South Tampa foundations and tropical borders.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants usually form dense rounded shrubs about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. Light selective pruning keeps the habit full without removing every flower bud.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in low hedges, foundation groups, driveway islands, pool landscapes, and repeated tropical borders. Give plants airflow and keep them clear of walls and irrigation spray.
Sunlight
Full sun creates the best flowering and density. Partial sun works, although heavy shade reduces blooms and opens the plant.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Ixora prefers acidic, well-drained soil. Keep mulch away from stems, irrigate deeply during establishment, and avoid alkaline amendments that trigger iron and manganese deficiency.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring provides mild establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also works when irrigation is dependable and the root zone is checked frequently.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after a bloom flush and remove dead interior twigs. Monitor for scale, aphids, mites, leaf spots, and yellowing caused by high soil pH.
Wildlife Value
The flower clusters attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators over a long season. Add native host plants nearby to support complete butterfly life cycles.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Maui Yellow Ixora thrives in heat and humidity but is sensitive to freezes and cold wind. Protected South Tampa sites recover faster after winter damage.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
No major thorn or root issue is typical. Keep shrubs back from walks so wet flower debris does not create slippery surfaces.
Invasive Concerns
Ixora is nonnative and is not generally considered invasive in managed Florida landscapes. Remove volunteers if they appear.
Helpful Resources
For site-specific guidance, review current UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommendations and confirm local placement, irrigation, and maintenance requirements before installation.
