Overview

Mondo grass is a nonnative evergreen ground cover with narrow arching leaves. It resembles turf but belongs to the asparagus family. It forms tidy clumps and performs well in shaded Tampa beds where lawn grass thins.

Mature Size

Standard mondo grass reaches about 8 to 12 inches tall and spreads slowly by underground stems. Dwarf forms remain much shorter and fill more slowly.

Light and Water

Partial shade to shade gives the best color. Morning sun is acceptable. Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate irrigation during dry weather.

Soil and Drainage

Plant in well-drained soil with organic matter. Mondo grass tolerates many soil types but declines in standing water or harsh reflected heat.

Care

Remove leaves and debris before they mat into the clumps. Divide crowded plants when centers thin. Trim old foliage near the end of winter before fresh spring growth begins.

Landscape Uses

Use as edging, a massed shade ground cover, a filler between stepping stones, or beneath trees where mowing is difficult. It tolerates light foot traffic but does not replace turf in active areas.

Best Planting Time

Fall through spring is ideal. Space plants according to cultivar size and how quickly the bed needs to close.

Tampa Notes

Protect it from prolonged afternoon sun. Check whether a site receives enough irrigation beneath dense tree roots.
