Overview
Pink muhly grass is a Florida native bunchgrass valued for fine green foliage and airy pink-purple flower clouds in fall. It remains compact and provides movement without aggressive spreading.
Mature Size and Growth
Foliage usually reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Flower plumes raise the seasonal height to roughly 3 to 4 feet.
Where to Use It
Use in sweeping drifts, sunny borders, median-style beds, rain-garden edges, and modern landscapes. Backlighting makes the fall flower display especially strong.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun for dense growth and reliable flowers. It tolerates sandy soil, drought, and salt after establishment. Good drainage prevents crown decline.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant in fall through early spring or during the rainy season with careful watering. Cut old foliage to 8 to 12 inches in late winter before new shoots emerge. Avoid summer shearing.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Seeds and foliage support small wildlife and insects. Clumps provide cover while adding native seasonal color with little fertilizer or irrigation.
Important Considerations
Shade produces floppy growth and fewer flowers. Space plants for airflow and keep mower or string-trimmer damage away from the crown. Learn more from Florida Native Plant Society.
