Overview

A compact Florida-native evergreen oak with small glossy leaves and a dense irregular crown, ideal for bringing authentic scrub character to dry coastal landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

It usually forms a large shrub or small tree 10 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide. Multiple trunks create a naturally sculptural habit.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it for native hedges, wildlife screens, coastal accents, erosion control, or small-tree massing. It fits spaces that are too limited for full-sized oaks.

Sunlight

Full sun produces dense branching and the best overall form. Partial sun is tolerated, especially beneath an open high canopy.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Myrtle oak excels in infertile, acidic, rapidly drained sand. Water through establishment, then avoid frequent irrigation because established plants are highly drought tolerant.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is the easiest planting period in Tampa. Preserve the root ball and avoid amending a small isolated planting hole.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune sparingly to guide trunk structure or maintain clearance. Its natural irregular outline is more attractive and healthier than repeated formal shearing.

Wildlife Value

Acorns feed birds and small mammals, while dense evergreen foliage provides cover and nesting space. It is an excellent addition to a layered native habitat garden.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Florida heat, reflected sun, drought, and coastal exposure are well tolerated once roots establish. Normal Central Florida cold presents little concern.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Although smaller than many oaks, it still needs clearance from walks, walls, and utilities. Acorns and leaf litter occur seasonally.

Invasive Concerns

This species is native to Florida and not invasive. Occasional seedlings close to mature plants are easy to relocate or remove.
