Overview

Mystery gardenia is a substantial cultivar of Gardenia jasminoides prized for large, richly fragrant double white flowers and polished evergreen foliage.

Mature Size and Habit

Given suitable soil and light, it can reach roughly 5 to 8 feet tall and wide with an upright-rounded outline.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a fragrant specimen, loose foundation shrub, flowering screen, or backdrop near patios and entries.

Sunlight

Provide morning sun and afternoon shade or bright filtered light.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in acidic, organic, well-drained soil and maintain uniform moisture without waterlogging. Alkaline soil commonly causes chlorosis.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall, winter, and early spring are the most forgiving planting periods. Roots can establish in mild weather before summer.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune after the main bloom, removing only wayward, damaged, or crowded branches. Late pruning sacrifices flower buds.

Wildlife Value

The scented flowers may draw insect visitors, but double petals can restrict access to nectar and pollen.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Heat is tolerated when roots remain cool and evenly moist. Hard freezes may damage exposed buds and foliage.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Gardenia has low overall toxicity but ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset in people or pets.

Invasive Concerns

Mystery gardenia is a nonnative cultivar but is not generally considered invasive in Florida.
