Overview
Natal plum is a dense nonnative evergreen shrub with glossy leaves, white star-shaped flowers, red fruit, and forked thorns. It tolerates heat, wind, salt, and coastal conditions.
Mature Size
Cultivars range from low ground-cover forms to shrubs 6 to 8 feet tall and wide. Confirm mature size before planting.
Light and Water
Full sun supports dense growth and flowering. Water during establishment, then irrigate during extended drought.
Soil and Drainage
Use well-drained sandy soil. Natal plum tolerates alkaline and salty sites better than wet soil.
Care
Prune selectively during warm weather. Wear heavy gloves and eye protection because thorns and milky sap create hazards.
Landscape Uses
Use as a coastal hedge, security planting, screen, or durable foundation shrub. Keep it away from narrow walks and play areas.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall supports rooting.
Safety and Tampa Notes
Only fully ripe fruit is considered edible. Other plant parts and unripe fruit should not be eaten. Freezes may damage exposed growth.
